El Paso, Texas is nicknamed the Sun City because the sun shines 302 days a year, even while the 7,000-foot Franklin Mountains towering behind the city might be covered in snow. El Paso was once a major copper refining area. It now relies on food production, clothing, construction materials, and agriculture (cotton, produce, livestock, and pecans) for much of its goods economy. Tourism from both US and Mexico is a signification portion of the service economy.
As expected, many of the cultural attractions focus on Southwestern history and artifacts. The Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens (at UTEP) has a large collection of Native American pottery. The El Paso Museum of Archaeology has displays of culture and geology of the Southwest along with native plants. The city also has Abraham Chavez and Plaza Theatres for the performing arts along with the McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre in a breathtaking setting in the Franklin Mountains.
