Detroit, Michigan is one of the oldest cities in the Midwest US, founded over three hundred years ago. It was originally an outpost providing convenient access to the fur trade because of its location along the Detroit River connecting the Great Lakes to the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Everything changed by 1900 when Henry Ford started the automotive industry. Detroit soon dominated as the auto capital of the world for many decades, with General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler operating in the Greater Detroit Metro area of roughly five million people.
GM, headquartered in Detroit, is still in the Fortune 500 Top 10 US companies. Local employment has declined, however, as global automotive industry dynamics have changed. Detroit has addressed this transition by working to reinvent itself and expand other industries, drawing companies to the Renaissance Center, a renovated International Waterfront, and other uptown locations. DTE Energy, Quicken Loan, and OnStar are all headquartered in Detroit.

The city hosts a number of annual festivals including the African World, Greektown Arts, and International Jazz Fest, and, of course, the North American International Auto Show.
