Being the greater municipality within Greater Miami, Hialeah has a population of more than 220,000 and is the sixth largest city in Florida and the tenth largest in the U.S. Interestingly a majority of the population, over 70% consists of Cuban Americans. Apart from having one of the largest Spanish speaking communities, the language has become quite important as a part of everyday life.
Hialeah is located in between the Everglades and Biscayne Bay. The city’s name originated from Muskogee and actually means ‘pretty prairie’. The beautiful land and its grassy plains caught the attention of James H. Bright and Glenn Curtiss. In time, the two developed the town and the Hialeah Park race track as well. Initially, the city was envisioned to be a playground for the elite but exiles fleeing Cuba caused huge transformations to be made to the original planning. This meant the city was redesigned for a working class community instead.
What really sets this city apart from the others in the region is its commercial center that is located in the Miami-Dade County. National retailers including Target, Kohl’s, Walmart, Starbucks and Home Depot can be found scattered across the city. Moreover, there are various other local stores which compete with recognized brands and franchises. These local businesses stay competitive due to their traditional marketing and business strategies in order to meet the demands of the local community.

After spending more than $50 million dollars, the Hialeah Park Race Track was restored and renovated. This time it could operate slot machines as well. The track was reopened for the public in 2009 but strictly for quarter horse races only. Additional developments are being planned for the construction of an entertainment complex as well. Moreover, the city boasts more than five public swimming pools, more than twelve public parks, three tennis centers, and aquatic centers along with a football stadium which can seat more than 9,000 people at a time.
The city has two of the most renowned high schools which were later awarded as Silver winners for the Best High Schools in the U.S. However, the city has its own share of private and public schools along with its own public library which was inaugurated in 1924.
