Maine is also the northern terminus of the 2,181 mile Appalachian Trail. Thru-hikers face some of the hardest challenges of their two to six-month journey traveling the 281 miles through Maine uphill to Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park. Moose frequently appear along the trail as if to give them final encouragement.
Agriculture is a big component of Main’s economy with poultry, eggs, dairy products, cattle, apples, maple syrup, and potatoes. Maine is the largest blueberry producer in the world, providing 25% of all blueberries in North America. Lobstering and groundfishing remain as part of the commercial fishing that has been a large part of Maine’s economy historically.
