Despite serious racial conflict in the past, now over fifty years later, Mississippi has more African-American elected officials than any other US state.

Mississippi State, University of Mississippi, and University of Southern Mississippi are among the four-year colleges in the state. There are another 30 four-year and two-year colleges and universities. Mississippi has non-major league professional sports teams: the Surge (ice hockey), Brilla (soccer), Braves (baseball), and RiverKings (hockey).
