Mississippi is doing much to develop its tourist economy. The Mississippi Freedom Trail is under development, identifying many of the historic sites of the Civil Rights struggles across the state. Despite serious racial conflict in the past, now over fifty years later, Mississippi has more African-American elected officials than any other US state.

The Natchez Trail offers views of Native American historical sites. Black Creek and Tuxachanie Trails wind through DeSoto National Forest. The state has over 2500 geocaching sites. Mississippi State, University of Mississippi, and University of Southern Mississippi are among the four-year colleges in the state. There are another 30 four-year and two-year colleges and universities.
