Our boss has been asked a lot of questions over the years, the most popular being “How do you do it?” And the answer? Lean Production.
So what exactly is this Lean Production technique? Simply put, it is an organized system put into place by a company dedicated to preserving the quality of their products while eliminating unnecessary waste. Sounds pretty good doesn’t it?
Famously implemented by Japanese car manufacturing company Toyota, this is the same Lean Production system that we swear by and use in our manufacturing plants everyday; the only difference being that we make stamps instead of cars!
Thousands of companies all over the world have now started to use this production technique and who could blame them? Studies have shown a 15% increase in on time deliveries and an 11% increase in product quality from those companies who choose to implement the Lean Production method with their business.
Prior to this system gaining popularity were the assembly lines of old. Mistakes happened more often, workers were made to work in confined spaces, and choosing their required parts to complete piecing together a product could sometimes lead to confusion and errors because all the necessary parts may be scattered throughout the plant and the wrong ones could easily be grabbed my mistake.
The Lean Production way of doing things is just how it sounds – lean. As opposed to factories being filled with multitudes of parts, oftentimes the product is redesigned using less parts but still never skimping on quality and still adding value to the product. It may seem strange to redesign a product in an attempt to use fewer parts, but the results often lead to lower production costs and ultimately fewer mistakes. Fewer mistakes lead to less waste which means more profit in the long run.
Another plus to the lean production method is more space! Old assembly lines required more workers and much more crowded work spaces, now they’re quickly becoming a thing of the past. Here at Simply Stamps, we believe in saving money where we can so we can refocus it back in to our products and make sure that we’re delivering our customers with the very best service that we can. By adopting this particular production type we reorganized our production floor and made it so that all the necessary parts and components we readily available and close to our workers which helps to cut down on any confusion which can lead to costly mistakes.
Thanks to the Lean Production manufacturing model, our business has grown in leaps and bounds. Over the course of the past 3 years our employees have nearly tripled in number, and more of our simply stamps products exit the building through our doors and on to delivery trucks than ever before!
So when those same people who ask our boss “how do you do it?” follow up by asking “does it work?” the answer is an astounding “yes”.
