Michigan is really two states in one. The Lower Peninsula “mitten” is home to large industry. The Upper Peninsula (UP) “rabbit” is a water winter wonderland. Michigan has the largest number of state park and state forests in the US. Interesting fact: Someone in Michigan, with its 10,000 lakes and 36,000 miles of streams, is never more than six miles from a natural waterway! Michigan is surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes.

Several Michigan cities are known for their primary residents. Battle Creek hosts Kellogg headquarters and production facilities. General Motors, Ford, Delphi, Penske, Lear, TRW, Ally (formerly GMAC), and other major automotive manufacturers and suppliers are located in and around Detroit. Dow Chemical and Dow Corning are nearby in Midland.

Ann Arbor is home to University of Michigan, one of the top five public universities in the country. Lansing’s Michigan State University, Detroit’s Wayne State, and the UP’s Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan University also offer excellent public higher education.

UP residents are affectionately known as “Yoopers” with their own Scandinavian-influenced dialect and festivities. Historically mining and logging were the primary industries in the UP; now tourism and natural resource enjoyment have taken over. With much of the Upper Peninsula sparsely settled, the rich wilderness areas offer excellent opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. Isle Royale National Park in the middle of Lake Superior is one of the few places where wolves can be found in the wild. Quaint Mackinac Island is a popular honeymoon location.
