Four faces emerge from a rocky ridge in this sketch of Mount Rushmore. From left to right they are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt with his mustache, and Abraham Lincoln with his beard, drawn with loose contour lines.
The sculpture was carved into granite in the Black Hills of South Dakota between 1927 and 1941.
Teachers can hand out stamped cards for a Presidents' Day lesson, with each student writing a fact about one face. It is a natural stamp for a road trip journal through the Dakotas, too.
Light, even ink keeps the fine facial lines from blurring.
