Types of Rubber Stamp Bodies and Their Uses

Rubber stamp bodies can be divided into six main categories: pre-inked, self-inking, custom wood handle stamps, European hand stamps, pocket stamps, and heavy duty professional stamps. Each type of stamp body has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to choose the right one for your needs.

What type of stamp do I need?

Type of stamp bodyAdvantagesDisadvantages
Pre-inkedEasy to use, durable, long-lasting. Great for sharp impressionsMore expensive than self-inking, ink color cannot be changed
Self-inkingLess expensive than pre-inked stamps. Best choice for repeat and rapid stamping. Lasts for thousands of impressionsink color can be changed, but not easily.
Custom wood handleMost affordable, easy to change your impression color.Requires separate ink pad, not as good for repeat stamping.
European hand stampSleek curved finish, can easily change ink colorMore expensive than other types of wood handle stamps. Requires separate ink pad.
Pocket stampSmall, portable, easy to useNot as durable as other types of stamps. Inherently small.
Professional stampsHighest quality premium stamps, strong build, excellent for repeated stamping.Expensive, not really for home use.

Pre-inked stamps

Pre-inked stamps have a built-in ink reservoir, which makes them very easy to use. Simply press the stamp onto paper and you're done. Pre-inked stamps are also very durable, and can last for up to 50,000 impressions. However, pre-inked stamps are typically more expensive than other types of stamps, and the ink color cannot be changed. They are not ideal for rapid repeated stamping, but are the best choice if you are looking to make highly accurate detailed impressions (i.e. art designs, logo branding).

Self-inking stamps

Some of our most popular stamps. Self-inking stamps are similar to pre-inked stamps, but they have a smaller internal ink pad that needs to be re-inked every few thousand impressions. Self-inking stamps are also less expensive than pre-inked stamps, and the ink color can potentially be changed. Self-inking stamps are the best choice for when you need to rapidly and repeatedly stamp things with the same color (i.e. holiday cards, repetitive office stamping tasks).

Custom wood handle stamps

Custom wood handle stamps are the most traditional type of rubber stamp. They require a separate ink pad, but this gives you the flexibility to use different ink colors and to re-ink the stamp as needed. Wood handle stamps are also the most affordable type of rubber stamp, and they are available in a wide range of sizes and shapes. We hand craft our wooden stamps at our facilities here in the USA. They give a good clean impression and can come in very small or large sizes, making them particularly good if you are looking for a custom size

European hand stamps

European hand stamps are a type of wood handle stamp that is much more elegant than the classic wood, but ultimately stamp in a similar fashion. Although they do not offer quite the same amount of size options as the classic wood version, they have a much sleeker look and finish, with a unique curved handle (think European sports car vs. American muscle car).

Pocket stamps

Pocket stamps are small, portable stamps that are perfect for on-the-go stamping. They have a self-inking mechanism, which makes them very easy to use. Pocket stamps are a good choice for people who need to stamp documents or packages on the go such as notaries, doctors and other professionals.

Professional Stamps

These stamps from Trodat are our premiere stamp product, specifically designed to be stronger, cleaner and faster than any previous models. Made from brushed stainless steel which reflects the high-quality processing of the stamp. Comes complete with a new finger guard to keep your fingers clean when changing the ink cartridge. Added feet and sturdy designs also make it easy to rapidly stamp over and over. Ideal for businesses or anyone who needs to make a lot of repeated stamp impressions.

Frequently asked questions about Custom Stamps?

Yes, you can use your custom rubber stamps on wood or plastic surfaces. However, it is important to use the correct type of ink for the surface you are stamping. For example, if you are stamping on wood, you will need to use a permanent ink. If you are stamping on plastic, you will need to use a plastic-compatible ink. We offer a wide variety of different inks for different surfaces, so you can be sure to find the perfect ink for your needs.
The main difference between self-inking and pre-inked stamps is the way they are inked. Self-inking stamps have a small internal ink pad that re-inks the stamp between each press. This makes them very convenient to use, as you do not need to carry around a separate ink pad. Self-inking stamps are also a good choice for high-volume stamping, as the ink pad can last for several thousand impressions. Pre-inked stamps have a built-in ink reservoir that does not need to be re-inked. This makes them very easy to use, as you simply press the stamp onto paper and you're done. Pre-inked stamps are also a good choice for low-volume stamping, as the ink reservoir can last for up to 50,000 impressions. Ultimately, the best type of stamp for you will depend on your individual needs. If you need a stamp that is convenient to use and can handle high-volume stamping, a self-inking stamp is a good choice. If you need a stamp that is easy to use and can handle low-volume stamping, a pre-inked stamp is a good choice.
Which type of rubber stamp body is right for you will depend on your individual needs. If you need a stamp that provides the highest quality impressions, a pre-inked stamp is a good choice. If you need a stamp that is less expensive, with a focus on repeated and rapid stamping, then a self-inking stamp is a good option. If you need a stamp for a physically large design or are on a budget, a custom wood handle stamp is a good choice. If you need a stamp that is made from high-quality materials and has a traditional design, a European hand stamp is a good choice. If you need a small, portable stamp for on-the-go stamping, a pocket stamp is a good choice.
